Make a coherent first shortlist without buying boxes that do not work together.
I want better sound. Where should I start? Start with the result you want, then design the complete signal, speaker, power and bass path around the vehicle.
Decide what is missing first: front-stage clarity, clean output at higher volume, bass extension, factory-system integration or cabin noise control. Then check the source signal, speaker locations, available space, electrical demand and budget as one system. Buying the most expensive individual component does not guarantee a coherent result.
Continue with the relevant APEX guideDoes choosing one premium brand guarantee better sound? No. Exact products, installation, signal quality and calibration matter more than a logo alone.
Premium brands provide different technologies and product architectures, but the final result still depends on correct matching, mounting, power, signal integration and tuning. Products from different brands can work together when their electrical, acoustic and functional requirements are verified.
Does the online product price include installation? No, unless the exact product page explicitly says that installation is included.
The APEX Customs Store is a supply and delivery catalogue. Product pages list what is supplied for the displayed price. Custom installation, fabrication, vehicle integration and tuning are separate services arranged through the APEX Customs Installation Studio.
Continue with the relevant APEX guideWhen should I ask a professional to design the system? Use professional design when factory integration, active speakers, multiple amplifiers or a DSP make the system interdependent.
Professional system design is strongly recommended when the factory source is retained, signals must be summed or corrected, speakers will run actively, multiple impedance options exist, electrical demand is high, or a DSP must control routing and calibration. These decisions affect both performance and equipment safety.
Choosing car audio
Understand the specifications that matter before comparing exact products.
Should I compare RMS power or maximum power? Use the continuous or RMS ratings at the stated impedance for meaningful matching.
Maximum or peak figures describe short-duration capability and are not the primary basis for matching speakers and amplifiers. Compare the manufacturer's continuous rating, the impedance at which it applies, channel count and operating conditions. Do not compare two wattage figures without checking those qualifiers.
Why does speaker or subwoofer impedance matter? The final load determines whether the amplifier can operate safely and how much power it can deliver.
An amplifier is designed for specific minimum loads in stereo or bridged operation. Voice-coil wiring and multiple speakers can change the final impedance seen by the amplifier. A load below the manufacturer's supported value can exceed current and thermal limits; a higher load normally reduces available output.
Does higher speaker sensitivity always mean a better speaker? No. Sensitivity describes output for a test input; it does not measure overall sound quality.
Sensitivity can help estimate how efficiently a speaker produces output, but test voltage, impedance and measurement method must be comparable. Frequency response, distortion, installation, crossover use and intended operating range remain important. Use the exact manufacturer's data sheet rather than one isolated number.
Should I choose component or coaxial speakers? Components allow more placement and crossover control; coaxials can be the cleaner solution where space and complexity are limited.
A component system separates the tweeter and midwoofer and normally includes a passive crossover or is used actively. That creates more installation and tuning flexibility. A coaxial combines drivers in one location and can simplify fitment. The better choice depends on mounting positions, depth, amplification, system goals and budget.
Continue with the relevant APEX guideIf the speaker diameter matches, will it fit my vehicle? Not necessarily. Mounting depth, cut-out, grille clearance, adapters and window movement are separate checks.
The advertised diameter is only one fitment dimension. Confirm the manufacturer's cut-out and mounting depth, available front clearance, connector or adapter requirements and anything moving behind the speaker. Vehicle trim levels and factory audio options can also change the application.
How do I match a subwoofer and amplifier? Compare continuous power at the final wired impedance, then verify enclosure and electrical requirements.
Start with the subwoofer voice-coil arrangement and number of drivers to calculate a supported final impedance. Compare the amplifier's continuous output at that load with the subwoofer's continuous rating. Then confirm enclosure type and volume, signal filtering, wiring, fusing and vehicle electrical capacity.
Continue with the relevant APEX guideWhy are power cable and fusing part of the system design? The supply cable must carry the expected current and be protected close to its source.
Amplifier reliability and safety depend on conductor material, cross-sectional area, run length, current demand, grounding and correctly positioned protection. An amplifier's onboard fuse protects the equipment; upstream protection is selected to protect the installed supply cable. Follow the exact amplifier manual and local installation practice.
DSP and tuning
Learn what a DSP can do, what it cannot do alone and when professional calibration matters.
What does a car-audio DSP actually do? A DSP controls how source signals are corrected, routed and processed before reaching the system outputs.
Depending on the exact processor, DSP software can manage input correction, source selection, channel routing, crossovers, level, polarity, delay, equalisation and other processing. It creates the control required for a system, but it does not correct poor installation, unsuitable components or missing acoustic measurement by itself.
Is DSP tuning a simple DIY process? No. Understanding the controls is achievable, but a reliable final calibration requires system knowledge, safe setup and measurement.
A modern DSP exposes powerful control over signal routing, gain structure, filtering, polarity, phase, delay and equalisation. Incorrect decisions can reduce performance or damage speakers. APEX provides verified learning material so owners can understand their equipment and make better decisions, but professional installation and calibration by an accredited, knowledgeable installer or sound-tuning specialist remains the recommended route.
Does a DSP tune the vehicle automatically? Not by default. Some platforms include assisted measurement or optimisation, but the system still needs correct configuration and verification.
Manufacturer software may include wizards, analysers, target tools or automated functions. These features operate within a system that must already have the correct inputs, outputs, routing, speaker assignments and safe limits. Their result still needs to be checked against the actual vehicle and installation.
Why is acoustic measurement important for DSP tuning? The cabin, speaker positions and source processing change what reaches the listener; measurement reveals behavior that settings alone cannot confirm.
A vehicle creates level, frequency, timing and phase differences between channels. Factory systems may also process the input signal before it reaches the DSP. Manufacturer tools provide electrical and acoustic analysis functions because reliable correction depends on understanding the incoming signal and the response at the listening position.
Can I copy another vehicle's DSP file or settings? Treat it only as a model-specific starting reference when the manufacturer explicitly supports that application.
Even similar vehicles can differ in factory source processing, speaker locations, trim, equipment and installation. A setup file can contain routing, gain and protection decisions that are unsafe or incorrect for another system. Confirm exact hardware compatibility and preserve the current setup before importing or changing anything.
Where should I download DSP software and firmware? Use the exact manufacturer's official support or software page for your model.
Software and firmware compatibility can change by device generation. Use Audiotec Fischer DSP PC-Tool for supported BRAX, HELIX and MATCH devices, Audison bit Drive for supported Audison products, AudioControl's official downloads for DM processors, and Alpine's official support pages for supported Alpine DSP products. Verify the model and release notes before updating.
What should I do before changing an existing DSP setup? Identify the exact hardware and software version, then export and preserve the working setup before making one controlled change at a time.
Record the product model, firmware and software version. Save a clearly named backup of every working preset and keep it off the tuning computer where possible. Do not update firmware, reset the device or import another setup until the manufacturer's compatibility notes and recovery process are understood.
My DSP system does not sound right. What can I safely check? Stop changing multiple controls. Confirm the source, active preset, mute state and saved baseline, then use the exact manual or a tuning specialist.
First confirm that the correct source and known working preset are active and that no channel is muted. Note what changed and restore a verified backup if the manufacturer procedure supports it. Noise, missing output, clipping, incorrect staging, phase problems or weak imaging can require electrical and acoustic diagnosis. Do not guess final gain, crossover, EQ, phase or limiter settings from a symptom alone.
What DSP support does APEX provide with an online purchase? APEX provides product, order and legitimate warranty support plus verified learning resources; a supply-only purchase does not include unlimited remote system tuning.
We help you identify the correct product information, official software, manuals and safe next steps. A DSP's final performance depends on the complete installation and vehicle, so diagnosis and calibration are separate professional services. Systems installed or tuned by APEX follow the applicable booked support process; third-party installations should be assessed by their installer or a qualified sound-tuning specialist.
DUDU Auto
Choose a vehicle-specific head unit and understand the installation variables.
Can I choose a DUDU head unit only by screen size? No. The fascia, mounting, harness, CAN-bus and factory equipment must match the vehicle application.
A screen can be the correct nominal size and still be wrong for the dashboard or electronics. Start with the vehicle manufacturer, model, year range and factory system. Then verify the supplied trim plate, harness, CAN-bus interface and any camera or amplifier integration stated on the exact product page.
Do all DUDU head units support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the same way? Do not assume that from Android alone; confirm the exact model's stated wired or wireless functions.
Android as an operating platform does not by itself prove a specific phone-projection feature or connection method. Check the exact APEX product listing and official DUDU documentation for the model, software version and required application or accessory.
What does the CAN-bus interface do? It translates supported vehicle data and controls between the vehicle and head unit; available functions vary by application.
Depending on the vehicle and interface, CAN-bus integration may support items such as steering controls, ignition state, illumination, factory settings or vehicle information. It does not guarantee every factory function. Exact behavior depends on model year, trim, original radio and the selected CAN configuration.
Will my factory reverse camera work with a DUDU head unit? Possibly, but the camera signal, voltage, connector and factory integration must be verified.
Factory cameras are not all electrically or digitally equivalent. Retention may require a vehicle-specific adapter or interface, and some factory multi-camera systems need a more specialised solution. Use the exact product application and official wiring guidance; do not connect an unknown camera supply by trial and error.
Where should I get DUDU OS instructions and updates? Use the official DUDU wiki and the update path documented for the exact device.
DUDU maintains an official wiki covering installation, cameras, connectivity, system functions and peripherals. Update instructions can depend on hardware and software generation. Confirm the exact unit before changing firmware, factory settings or CAN configuration, and preserve working settings where the product allows it.
Should a vehicle-specific head unit be professionally installed? Yes when trim, CAN-bus, factory amplifiers, cameras or vehicle wiring need integration.
Vehicle-specific packaging reduces adaptation, but it does not remove the need to identify connectors, protect wiring, configure CAN-bus and test retained functions. Professional installation is recommended where the vehicle has a factory amplifier, camera system, data integration or non-standard previous wiring.
Sound treatment
Separate vibration damping, absorption and isolation before choosing material.
What is the difference between damping, absorption and isolation? Damping controls panel vibration, absorption reduces reflected acoustic energy and isolation limits sound transmission between areas.
These materials perform different jobs and are often layered. A viscoelastic damping sheet controls resonant panels. Absorbing materials reduce acoustic energy in cavities and behind trim. Barrier or isolation products reduce sound transmission. Choose a product by its official application area and material function, not thickness alone.
Can foam replace vibration-damping mat? No. Foam and damping sheet address different physical behavior.
A foam or fibrous absorber is selected for acoustic absorption, decoupling or another stated purpose. A vibration damper is bonded to a panel to control structural resonance. Follow the manufacturer's composition, application-area and layering guidance for the exact product.
Do I need 100 percent damping-sheet coverage? Not for every resonance-control task; continuous coverage becomes more important for barrier systems and sealed transitions.
Coverage depends on the panel behavior, product and intended layer. Strategic damping can control resonance without covering every millimetre, while a transmission barrier depends more on continuous, well-sealed coverage. Use the exact manufacturer's coverage and application guidance before calculating packs.
Can every sound-treatment material be used anywhere in the vehicle? No. Temperature, moisture, compression, weight and application area differ by product.
Manufacturer data identifies suitable areas such as doors, roof, floor, firewall, wheel arches or trim. A product designed for a dry interior cavity may not be suitable where moisture or high heat is expected. Check sheet size, mass, thickness, adhesion and stated operating environment for the exact model.
Wrap and PPF
Shortlist TeckWrap finishes and understand care, samples and professional application.
Will a TeckWrap colour look exactly like it does on my screen? No. Use online imagery to shortlist, then confirm the finish with a physical swatch.
Display calibration, brightness, ambient light, camera processing and viewing angle can all alter colour and finish. Metallic, colour-shift, satin and textured products are especially sensitive to lighting. TeckWrap advises using physical samples and matching production lots for colour consistency.
Is colour-change vinyl the same as paint-protection film? No. Vinyl is primarily selected for appearance; PPF is engineered around surface protection, even when it is coloured.
The products use different constructions, performance goals and care or installation requirements. Choose the product category first: colour change, clear PPF, colour PPF or window film. Then review the exact product bulletin rather than assuming one film provides the function of another.
How long will a vehicle wrap last in South Africa? There is no single lifetime: film series, climate, exposure angle, installation and care all affect durability.
TeckWrap publishes product-specific durability and warranty information with climate and exposure qualifications. South African heat and UV exposure make the exact product bulletin, horizontal versus vertical surface and aftercare important. Do not use a generic lifespan claim for every finish.
How should a wrapped vehicle be washed? Use pH-neutral products and gentle tools, and avoid aggressive chemicals, abrasion and direct pressure at edges.
Follow the care instructions for the exact film. TeckWrap advises gentle cleaning, prompt removal of aggressive contamination and caution with pressure washing. Matte and textured finishes need finish-specific care. Do not apply polish, wax or coating unless it is explicitly approved for that film.
Can I install a full vehicle wrap myself? Material can be purchased where listed, but a durable full-vehicle result requires preparation, film handling and installation skill.
Large panels, edges, recesses, heat management and surface condition directly affect appearance and durability. Improper installation can also fall outside manufacturer warranty coverage. For a complete vehicle, professional assessment and application are the recommended route.
Orders and delivery
Know how stock confirmation, allocation, dispatch and tracking work.
Is every product shown as available definitely in a warehouse? No. APEX confirms and allocates the exact SKU from local or authorised supplier stock after an order.
Many products are fulfilled from APEX or South African distributor stock, and availability can change during the day. Your order is recorded immediately, then we verify and allocate each exact item. If timing is critical, request a stock check before checkout.
What happens after I place and pay for an order? APEX records the order, checks each exact item and sends the allocation outcome and next step.
Stock checks normally take place during the Monday-to-Friday business window, 08:00-17:00 SAST. Once the products are allocated, the order moves into preparation. Your order page and emails show the progress, and tracking is added after the courier booking is complete.
When should I expect dispatch? Most allocated local-stock orders are prepared for courier handover within one to two business days.
Most allocated local-stock orders are prepared for courier handover within one to two business days. Supplier transfers, multiple warehouses or split shipments can take longer, and APEX sends a progress update when the normal preparation window is exceeded. Standard delivery combines a one-to-three-business-day handling window with an estimated two-to-seven-business-day courier transit window; courier transit begins after handover, not at checkout.
When is nationwide delivery free? Eligible orders of R5,000 or more receive free standard nationwide delivery.
Eligible orders of R5,000 or more receive free standard nationwide delivery. Orders below the threshold show the applicable delivery option during checkout. Extremely unusual destinations or services outside the standard offer may require confirmation, but no delivery charge is changed after checkout without contacting you first.
Can APEX special-order an exact model? Usually, where the manufacturer can supply it; APEX confirms the route, price and expected timing before commitment.
Air-import orders commonly take about 14 to 21 business days after confirmation, but manufacturer allocation, customs or consolidated freight can take longer. APEX explains the expected route and payment arrangement before you approve it.
What if a courier shipment is delayed, lost or damaged? APEX remains your point of contact and assists with the trace and applicable claim process.
Courier networks can affect estimated dates after handover. Keep the packaging, photograph visible damage and contact APEX promptly with the order number and evidence. We will assist with tracing and the applicable carrier, replacement, repair or refund process.
Warranty and support
Understand the support APEX provides and the information needed to resolve a problem.
Do all products have the same warranty period? No. Warranty coverage and duration depend on the exact manufacturer, product and authorised sales route.
Keep the APEX invoice, original serial details and packaging where practical. The exact manufacturer's warranty terms apply alongside South African consumer law. Do not assume a warranty duration from another product in the same brand.
What information should I provide for a product problem? Send the order number, exact model, serial number, clear description and useful photographs or video.
Also explain when the problem started, how the product is installed and any troubleshooting already performed. Do not dismantle or alter the product unless an authorised process instructs you to do so. Complete evidence lets APEX route the matter efficiently without repeated questions.
What support is included with a supply-only online order? APEX supports the order, supplied product information and legitimate warranty process; installation design and tuning are separate services.
We provide the correct invoice, order communication, manufacturer documentation and help with a valid product or warranty issue. A supply-only order does not include responsibility for third-party wiring, fitment, calibration or system design. Those questions should return to the installer who can inspect and measure the vehicle.
What should I do if the parcel is damaged or the item is not what I ordered? Keep everything, document it immediately and contact APEX with the order number before installation.
Photograph the outer parcel, label, internal packaging and product. Do not install or modify an incorrect or visibly damaged item. Prompt evidence helps APEX verify the shipment and pursue the correct courier or supplier process.
